Meaning -
Obeisance unto Yee, O Fathers, for the acquisition of happiness and knowledge. Obeisance unto Yee, O Fathers for the removal of misery and enemies. Obeisance unto Yee, O Fathers for longevity, Obeisance unto Yee, O Fathers, for sovereignty, and display of justice. Obeisance unto Yee, O Fathers, for the cessation of manifold calamities, obeisance unto yee, O Fathers, for righteous indignation. Fathers, know our desire to acquire knowledge. Fathers, know our reverence unto Ye is for your respect. Fathers, come daily to our houses, and give us instructions. Fathers we always give unto yee, whatever we have. We give yee these clothes, pray accept them.
-
Fathers means the wise, the learned, the high souled, just, religious-minded, philanthropic persons, who work for humanity, and are free from ignoble passions, selfishness, and sordid motives. The repetition of the words नम: is meant to indicate the different qualities of the fathers. For fuller explanation see Swami Dayanandas Commentary , Ubbat, Mahidhar and Griffith have interpreted पितर: as six seasons of the year.
